Column security profile

New Column Security Profile experience

Posted on October 9, 2024October 10, 2024 By Jeroen Scheper

most of you perhaps still know it as Field Security Profiles but it depends on whether you are working via the “classic interface” or using the Power Platform Admin Center for example and are more familiar with the term Column Security Profiles. For a long time, both options were still routed to the classic interface but this has changed now.

Column security profiles allow you to control access to specific columns within a table. This is not the same as permissions that you apply via security roles for accessing tables. In order to use column security profiles you need to identify on column level that it can be used when designing your column security profiles.

Classic user experience

The classic experience you can access via:

  • Settings > Advanced Settings
  • Select Security
  • Select Field Security Profiles

When opening a Field Security Profile, in this example the Approval Process Override, the experience is as follows. As you can see it offers options to Read, Update or Create.

New Column security profile experience

The new column security profile experience you access via:

  • Open the Power Platform Admin Center
  • Select the environment
  • Select Settings from the ribbon
  • Navigate to Column Security Profile in the User + Permissions section
  • Open the Column security profile

As you can see below the experience is offering a better overview if you ask me. On top of this, you can manage the Masking rules functionality which is still in preview. My friend Megan Walker has posted a great article about this that you can find here: Secured Masking Rules In Dataverse (Dynamics 365) (meganvwalker.com)
